{"id":79,"date":"2016-06-29T09:53:17","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T15:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pcmdx.net\/blog\/?p=79"},"modified":"2016-06-29T09:55:33","modified_gmt":"2016-06-29T15:55:33","slug":"windows-10-automatic-upgrades-getting-aggressive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pcmdx.net\/blog\/2016\/06\/29\/windows-10-automatic-upgrades-getting-aggressive\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10 Automatic Upgrades Getting Aggressive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past month Microsoft has been getting aggressive with their Windows 10 &#8220;auto-upgrades&#8221;. \u00a0We call it an auto-upgrade because the user doesn&#8217;t seem to have a choice on the upgrade. \u00a0They will walk away from their PC and when they come back they&#8217;ve been upgraded without doing anything to start the process.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re sticking with your recommendation: \u00a0If you have Windows 7, stick with Windows 7 until 2020, when Windows 7 comes to end-of-life. \u00a0If you have Windows 8, go ahead and upgrade to Windows 10. \u00a0Microsoft is giving a deadline of July 29, 2016 as the date of the upgrade being free, so do it before then.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been some adverse consequences for Microsoft for the auto-upgrades. \u00a0Some might say these were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/microsoft-pays-woman-10000-over-forced-windows-10-install\/#ftag=CAD590a51e\" target=\"_blank\">costly in nature<\/a>\u00a0for Microsoft. \u00a0Because of this, Microsoft has <a href=\"https:\/\/nakedsecurity.sophos.com\/2016\/06\/29\/windows-10-now-asks-nicely-if-you-want-your-free-upgrade\/\" target=\"_blank\">throttled back on their forcefulness in installing the upgrade<\/a>, however, this is not been 100% true so far.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, you do have 30 days to go back to the previous operating system, but the reversal doesn&#8217;t always work.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, we&#8217;re recommending the following install: \u00a0Go to www.grc.com\/Never10.htm and select the green &#8220;Download Now&#8221; button. \u00a0Download the small file, and then go open it. \u00a0This will open up a window that will have to options on it. \u00a0The writing initially will be in a ref font and will read <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;Windows 10 Upgrade is ENABLED for this system!&#8221;<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0Click on the button at the bottom of the window that reads &#8220;Disable Win10 Upgrade&#8221;. \u00a0The writing will change to\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">&#8220;Windows 10 Upgrade is DISABLED\u00a0for this system!&#8221;<\/span><\/strong> in green font. \u00a0By saving the file, you can always go back if you want to upgrade to Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been upgraded, and things aren&#8217;t working anymore, give us a call. \u00a0Some programs are NOT compatible with Windows 10, so be prepared to upgrade if you&#8217;ve been upgraded and you can&#8217;t go back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past month Microsoft has been getting aggressive with their Windows 10 &#8220;auto-upgrades&#8221;. \u00a0We call it an auto-upgrade because the user doesn&#8217;t seem to have a choice on the upgrade. \u00a0They will walk away from their PC and when they come back they&#8217;ve been upgraded without doing anything to start the process.
